Discovery of the missing enzyme

To make this product via fermentation, the first challenge was to understand how the plant does it.

The final enzymatic step in the pathway was not described, and our team drew on our cutting edge bioinformatic approaches to identify the missing enzyme.

With proof-of-concept production in hand in just 3 months, Genoscaler™ was then applied to achieve the significant gains required in enzyme and strain performance in order to meet commercial goals.

Genoscaler™ was applied in several ways to turn a strain making trace amounts of the product into a robust manufacturing candidate.

​The synthase was heavily engineered to meet performance specifications. Both the biosynthetic pathway and whole genome were targeted using CRISPR library approaches.

The resulting strain, developed in just 2 years, is highly robust in manufacturing across all scales tested.
